Hello everyone!! I can’t believe its October already. I can still remember rushing to get my phone from my room on the first day of January, because I wanted to wish a lot of people “Happy New year/Happy birthday” and now we are deep into October, lol. Quickly, for those who had trouble commenting, all you need to do is put in your name and email in the appropriate boxes and then put your comment and submit, that’s all!
So this review is about an event I attended on the 1st of October. The event was a fashion & exhibition show put together by La Mode magazine. There were two events to hold that day, organized by La Mode magazine; the fashion and exhibition show, which was free entry, and the gala night, awards and fund raising event which you needed a ticket to get into. I attended the fashion show which was scheduled to start by 10am, at the Oriental hotel, lekki-epe express way, and I have a lot to say so grab your gloves cause this tea is hot and piping.
First of all let me say this, any fashion show that is scheduled to start earlier than 4pm, is bound to fail. Argue with your mirror. There is absolutely no way you can hold a successful fashion show on a Sunday at 10am, in Nigeria. How do you expect that to work? And another thing, for heaven’s sake do not add exhibition to the name of your show if you do not have anything to exhibit. It’s quite infuriating to think about if you ask me. How dare you deceive people like that? It seems as though the meaning of the word “Exhibition” has been flung out so let me throw it in real quick; Exhibition is gotten from the word exhibit which means To display or show (something) for others to see. So if there is nothing to show, please sit down.
I got to the venue of the show quite late because of church, and the show hadn’t started. I mean, I expected that they would start late but getting there and they hadn’t started? Wow. The turnout I met was very low and the empty chairs were very noticeable (the crowd increased as the show progressed). The estimated amount of people in the hall was 80-120. Needless to say, Immediately I got in, I started regretting my decision to come for the show. I quickly went backstage to say hello to my designer friend Makioba, and the place was a mess!!! There were no racks for designers to hang their pieces, there was no division of spaces so everyone just stood anywhere doing anything. The lineup of designers had been messed up because some designers hadn’t shown up, so the available designers were being coerced to send their models out on the runway without adequate preparation. It was messy! After exchanging pleasantries, I left to take a seat and a few minutes later, the show started. Let me tell you, it was so easy for me to get backstage, I literally breezed through. There was no security whatsoever.
Caesar and Belinda
The hosts, Caesar Ume-Ezeoke and Belinda Effah, came out and the show began. They looked beautiful, Caesar rocking a green suit and Belinda wearing a green dress from Tiannah Styling. I would like to think, that they tried to salvage the boiling mess that was the show they were anchoring. However one cardinal sin they committed, was bringing on guests to come out and display their talents at different intervals. One girl came out to sing the special number she was supposed to sing in church, complete with vocal riffs, runs and dramatic air waving, another came out to twerk! At a fashion show! I nearly had a heart attack! There were some really amazing 8collections on the runway, and some of the models did really well but I still wonder where they got the rest from. Some of the models I saw there aren’t meant to be on a runway, at all! And some of the designs they wore, well I’d rather not say anything. Shout out to all the plus size models who walked the runway yesterday, they really gave the show much needed life and drama. To the makeup artist who did the makeup for the skinny models, please quit that line of profession, please. Save yourself before it is too late. Organizers of La mode fashion and exhibition show, whose idea was it to use a single spotlight as the only source of lighting for the runway? A single spotlight! Incredible.
Honestly, what is worth doing, is worth doing well. If you are going to organize a show (whether fashion or music or whatever), I would expect that the utmost best is put into that show to make it exceptional and up to standard. Trust me, I have been to fashion shows, so I know what I am talking about when I say this was the worst show show I have ever been to. I wasn’t even afraid to have several slices of pizza in the hall while the show was going on, something I would never dream of doing at any fashion show as a fashion enthusiast. I went on to do some research on La Mode magazine, and I found out that it wasn’t their first time of organizing that show. They had the same kind of event last year so I wonder why it turned out as horrible as it did. There is a lot of work to be done La Mode magazine. If more shows will be hosted and are expected to be taken seriously, then a lot has to be improved on.
Thanks for reading guys! I’d love to know your thoughts in the comment section! Stay blessed!!
